Small Business Lending Underwriting Manager


C&F Bank is recognized as one of the premier community banks in the country serving Virginians since 1927.We are looking for a highly motivated, customer service oriented, and results focused Small Business Lending Manager to join our growing C&F Bank Family.


The Small Business Lending Manager underwrites and approves small business loan requests. The Small Business Lending Manager will achieve Bank objectives by managing the quality of the underwriting and overall processing of Small Business Loan requests. Ensuring all Bank policy and government compliance needs are met, and that all customers- internal and external- receive the best service possible.





  • Underwrite small business loan requests utilizing Baker Hill Loan Origination software.
  • Structure and price loans to match loan needs of the customer and ensure Bank’s profit and risk is desirable.
  • Manage the monitoring of all loan approvals for compliance purposes, keeping current with regulation updates and changes.
  • Resolve any issues that arise during the underwriting process.
  • Adhere to all Bank policies and procedures as well as complying with all bank regulations.
  • Be well versed in all C&F Bank products and services to ensure relationship building opportunities.
  • Keep abreast of changing business trends that impact Small Business and translate those trends into business opportunities to grow the segment.
  • Recommends changes and/or improvements to the Bank’s loan policy, loan products, and general lending processes as needed.
  • Trains Relationship and Branch Managers on Small Business lending product and process regularly.
  • Works with Relationship and Branch Managers in structuring loan requests in a manner which will best mitigate lending risks while meeting borrower needs.
  • Tracks current business interest rates to have the ability to recommend changes to the Bank’s rates if necessary.
  • Be the face of C&F Bank in the community and participate in client meetings as needed.
  • Responsible for the mentoring and development of business analysts.
  • Effectively leverage the collective skill & resources of him/herself and the business analysts to achieve maximum productivity, efficiency and development.
  • Other job related duties as assigned, particularly special project work related to small business policy, underwriting, and/or risk management.


Knowledge & Skills

  • A demonstrated understanding of the principles of lending and business underwriting/loan decision making is required.
  • Experience and a level of proficiency with loan originations software and Microsoft Office is required.
  • Familiarity with Baker Hill Bank to Business and Advisory is preferred.
  • Advanced skills with MS Word, Excel and Access are desired.
  • Personable and able to build strong working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal are required.
  • Strong leadership, management, problem-solving, decision-making, training, and organization skills are preferred.
  • Able to communicate and work effectively at all levels of an organization, both internally and externally.
  • Must be an excellent listener; able to present ideas effectively one-on-one or with a large group.


Education & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in business, finance, or related field. MBA is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 or more years of previous experience in small business lending or related field.
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience is required.
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered.
