Overview

The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing a team of general accounting staff to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and assists the corporate controller and CFO in matters related to financial reporting and analysis.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:                                                                                        

  • Supervise accounting activities and staff, including general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, and investments
  • Oversee period end closings, including performing and reviewing reconciliations and account analyses as well as monthly consolidation
  • Assist in the financial reporting process, through preparation and review, to ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end management reports, financial statements, and regulatory reports
  • Provide ongoing coaching and development for accounting teammates
  • Analyze expense trends, research account fluctuations, and investigate errors
  • Report monthly financial results to management, including explanations of significant fluctuations
  • Supervise the bank’s wire operations to ensure proper procedures are followed, including evaluating risks of wire-related fraud
  • Support the design, implementation, and effectiveness of a financial control environment, including proper documentation with a focus on Bank specific accounting and reporting controls and Sarbanes-Oxley ("SOX") controls
  • Assist and support the corporate controller, CFO, and other bank leaders with other projects as assigned, including financial reporting and analysis

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required
  • Familiarity with banking industry is preferred
  • Public company experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP is required
  • Active CPA is preferred
  • 5-7 years of accounting experience
  • 2-3 years of managerial experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills preferred
  • Excellent organization skills including attention to detail and time management
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to effectively coach and develop staff
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build effective working relationships
  • Strong focus on continuous process improvement
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and analyze complex reports and transactions

Physical demands:  

Employee may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time: view computer monitors, keyboarding, sitting, motion of fingers/hands/wrists, and standing/walking; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 20 pounds.

 

Work Environment: 

Work is performed in an operational office environment.
