Overview

The position will support the Regional President and Senior Commercial Executives in the management of a Relationship Manager’s complete loan portfolio to include: underwriting, structuring and documenting of loan request.  They are responsible for protecting the Bank by providing an unbiased and objective view of the prospective borrower and thoroughly disclosing all identified risks.

 

Responsibilities include a combination of credit analysis and relationship management responsibilities with the career path towards transitioning to a Commercial Relationship Manager. The Regional President or assigned Relationship Manager (RM) will provide the Portfolio Manager with coaching and training around client management, prospecting, and other pertinent “client facing” skills and attributes needed to be a successful Relationship Manager. The Portfolio Manager will also be assigned a limited number of client relationships to develop the skills necessary to succeed in a Commercial Relationship Manager role. The Portfolio Manager will primarily complete their credit analysis duties for credit relationships belonging to their assigned Relationship Manager, performing all customary underwriting, risk management, and prudent credit analysis as detailed below and as detailed in the Bank’s Loan Policy.

Responsibilities

Underwriting and Risk Management (35%)

  • Manage complex loans by gathering needed information, obtaining appraisals, analyzing information, structuring credit decisions and recommending risk rating changes.
  • Owns the on-time completion of new underwritings and refinancings as applicable, annual reviews, renewals, amendments/waivers, and ancillary line approvals
  • Expands client relationships through consistent and direct client calling efforts, both in-person and on the phone
  • Analyzes financial information that is required for prudent loan approval and risk management practices
  • Provides direction and feedback to Loan Assistants and Relationship Manager(s) on proper workflow procedures and adherence to Bank credit policy
  • Works with RM, Credit Analyst Manager, and Senior Underwriter as appropriate on loan closings, including assistance with review of all due diligence items and ensuring that all closing conditions that require review by RM or Underwriting are met to the Bank’s satisfaction
  • Assists RM, Credit Analyst Manager, and Senior Underwriter on the review of all loan documentation, including the review of comments made by Borrower’s counsel

Credit Analysis (35%)

  • Researches borrower industry and market conditions (eMentor)
  • Review prepared analysis of the borrower and any related entity financial statements
  • Review prepared analysis of the guarantor/personal tax returns and financial statements
  • Evaluate cash flow and debt service analysis prepared by Credit Analyst team to include business and global cash flow debt service coverage ratios
  • Responsible for ongoing portfolio review of past dues, exceptions and maturing loan reports
  • Presents findings to appropriate loan approval bodies when necessary

 

Credit Request Management (20%)

  • Complete the review and final edits to the Credit Memo prior to submission for approval
  • Develops Term Sheets and Commitment Letters for prospective credit requests as appropriate; prepares Commercial Appraisal Requests, submitting such requests to Credit Administration for appraisal ordering
  • Create PowerPoint slides for credit presentation to the Board of Directors or Loan Committee (when applicable)
  • Create PowerPoint slides for deal concept discussion to Loan Committee (when applicable)

 

Special Projects/Other (10%)

  • Assist and participate in both client and prospect business development call preparation at the direction of the Regional President, Relationship Manager and Credit Analyst Manager
  • Works to retain and grow assigned client relationships, serving as the Commercial RM for selected customers and seeks the guidance from the Regional President and/or assigned Relationship Manager as appropriate
  • Actively works to keep past dues to a minimum
  • Responsible for managing renewals and exceptions
  • Partners with Credit Administration on credit requests and adheres to established Portfolio Management guidelines (i.e., delinquencies, documentation preparations, financial statement tracking, exceptions, and matured loans)
  • Works with complex credits, identifying and mitigating risk as assigned
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

 

Knowledge:

2-4 years of experience in financial services, preferably in a risk management, credit underwriting, or loan production role within a construction lending or commercial banking environment.

 

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of loan structuring, covenants, and closing conditions as well as a proficiency in term sheet preparation and collateral perfection. Must possess a clear and demonstrable knowledge of C&I, Commercial Real Estate, and Acquisition, Development, and Construction (AD&C) lending. Strong financial accounting knowledge/background is required.

 

Skills:              

Demonstrated analytical skills; demonstrated proficiency in the use of standard and specialized computer hardware and software packages such as Microsoft Office; demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.

 

Abilities:          

Understanding of financial accounting, loan structuring, and loan documentation as well as excellent credit analysis and financial/cash flow modeling skills.; effectively communicate information clearly through all media channels; interact effectively with clients and Bank employees at all levels; handle several tasks simultaneously and to work under time limits; must be able to effectively present findings to varied audiences.

 

Education:  

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics is required; MBA preferred.

 

Travel:

Required 5 - 10% of the time to our Operations Center located in Toano, VA.

           

Physical demands:  

Employee may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time: view computer monitors, keyboarding, sitting, motion of fingers/hands/wrists, and standing/walking

 

Work Environment: 

Work is performed in an operational office environment.
